STEP back in time to the ninth century when Chippenham Museum opens its doors for a Saxon Twelfth Night Celebration.

On twelfth night 878AD King Alfred was driven out of Chippenham by the Vikings. The events that followed changed history.

Now the museum is inviting local people to celebrate one of the town’s most important stories at the annual Saxon celebration from 10.30am to 3pm on Saturday January 5.

Children’s author Geoff Hill will be selling signed copies of his books and reading from his collection of Viking ghost stories.

You can meet and talk with a Saxon reenactor about life in the Saxon past. For decades archaeologists have been seeking to learn more about the Saxons in Chippenham, with several digs taking place in areas around the Market Place, so enjoy a tour of Saxon-related artefacts. Youngsters will also be able to discover Saxon teddies hidden around the museum at this family event for all budding history fans and archaeologists.
