CREATIVE students should start snapping to be part of Swindon College's new art competition.

The college's school of art is looking for one keen-eyed young person to become the first to win the title of Swindon and Wiltshire's Young Photographer of the Year.

Any 14-to-18-year-olds who live in the county can enter by submitting photos they've taken, which are all linked by a single theme.

Sue Rees, head of learning for Swindon College's school of art said: “We are excited to launch this new competition and we are looking for original photographs, where you have thought about the point of interest in a reflection.”

The college has released examples of what it's looking for from competition entrants, and judges will carefully peruse each submission before deciding who to crown Swindon and Wiltshire's top young photographer.

The top three photographers will each win a prize of a half-day workshop in the college's photography studios, plus an A3 framed print of their winning entry and vouchers to be given out for first place, second place, and third place.

The 12 best photographs will be used to produce a calendar for 2020, sponsored by local firm Acorn Press Printers, which will be sold by TWIGS. All proceeds from the sales of the calendars will go towards supporting the long-standing mental health charity.

Alan Holland, service manager for TWIGS, said: '"TWIGS is delighted to have been selected as the charity that will benefit from Swindon College's photography competition.

"We very much look forward to seeing the work that is submitted and would welcome participants to come to take photographs at the community garden site."

TWIGS provides gardening and craft activities for people with mental health problems at its Community Gardens in Cheney Manor. It also provides places for up to 100 people who can work on projects in the wider community all around Swindon.
