VILLAGERS from Steeple Ashton and neighbouring Great Hinton are preparing for the start of advent on December 2 by organising a second Christmas tree festival, that will run in St Mary’s Church from Saturday, November 30 through the advent weekend.
Altogether 29 village clubs and societies will each provide a Christmas tree to represent a different Christmas carol or song, with a competition inviting visitors to guess the carols and songs illustrated.
There will also be a grand draw of Christmas goodies to close the show on Sunday afternoon.
The festival follows a successful event in the village two years ago and is again being organised by husband and wife team, Ron and Chris Plum.
The trees will be a mixture of real Norwegian spruce and artificial creations, Norwegian spruce being the tree with a claim to be the oldest in the world. This type is loved for its scent and is the traditional Christmas tree introduced to Britain from Germany by Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert.
Opening times will be 10am to 6pm on Friday, November 30, and Saturday, December1 and 1-5pm on Sunday, December 2. Afternoon teas will be available in the nearby village hall on the Friday and Saturday.
