STUDENTS from Wiltshire College got a first hand insight into the workings of the European Parliament from MEP Molly Cato ahead of Britain leaving the European Union.

First and second year public services students met the South West Green party politician to hear about European Politics as part of their Wiltshire College course.

During her visit, students discussed university tuition fees in the UK, which are among the highest in the world.

Becca Denton, aged 22, is a second year higher national diploma student.

She said: “Molly was very engaging throughout the discussion and if people had been educated as to what European parliament roles and responsibilities entailed, I think people would have voted very differently in the referendum.”

Isla Henderson, 19, said: “It was worrying to hear about how high tuition fees are in Britain, compared to everywhere else in the world.”

Will Stallard, public services lecturer, said: “We are very grateful to Molly visiting our student and providing such a clear and helpful insight into the working of the European Union, and especially her role in the European Parliament.

“All this information is and will continue to be useful to my students not just for their general awareness of the European Union but also for their assessments.”

Molly Cato said: “It is really important for people who work or will be working in the public services to get a sense of and understand how the EU works and the outcome of Brexit is important for their futures.

“I was really pleased to be able to come and speak with the students and enjoyed answering any questions they had.”

Students met at the Wiltshire COllege and University Campus in Chippenham.
