A seven-year-old boy has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries after a collision on the A361 between Marlborough and Devizes last night.

It happened shortly after 7.30pm yesterday when two vehicles, a black Nissan GTR and a black Audi RS3, were travelling south towards Devizes.

They were about half a mile from the Hopton Road roundabout when the Audi attempted to overtake the Nissan.

Then, for reasons that are unknown at this stage, the driver of the Nissan lost control of the vehicle, crossing all four lanes and leaving the carriageway on the offside, coming to rest in woodland.

A seven-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the Nissan, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Bristol Children's Hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the Nissan, a man in his 40s, suffered a broken wrist.

The Audi was not involved in the collision and the driver was not injured.

The road was closed in both directions for a number of hours to allow investigations to take place and reopened at around 1am today (26 November 2018).

Nobody has been arrested.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw either vehicle beforehand, to contact Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting log 333 of yesterday
