Two men were arrested on Saturday (24 November) following a report of a disorder in Calne.

Police received a number of calls from the public reporting that a man had been assaulted outside the Co-Op store in Mill Street at approximately 4pm on 24 November.

Officers attended the scene and carried out searches to locate those involved.

Sgt Don Pocock said: “Due to the initial reports that we received from members of the public that weapons had been used, there was a large police response to the incident including armed officers and the dog section. This would understandably have caused concern to members of the public who would have seen a large number of officers in their neighbourhood.

“We were quickly able to locate two individuals we believe were involved, and the victim, who is a 28-year-old local man, was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath for treatment. It is believed he suffered injuries to his ribs. No weapons were located.

“Our enquiries are ongoing today and we would appeal for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or may have further information about what happened, to call 101 to help our investigation.

"It is likely that there were a number of witnesses - if you haven't already spoken to police please get in touch.”

The two men arrested, aged 20 and 28, from Melksham, have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
