AS Christmas draws near, the Salvation Army in Chippenham is teaming up with the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald once more to launch the Christmas Toy Appeal 2018.

The festive season can be particularly tough for families on a low income. When youngsters all seem to be getting the latest gadget or a pile of toys, needy children may feel more isolated then ever, if Santa brings nothing for them.

Last year the Salvation Army in Chippenham, thanks to the support of the people of Chippenham, were able to provide a hundred food boxes, as well as gifts for over 250 children - and they believe many more will be needing help this year.

The minister at Chippenham, Major Dawn McGarvey said: "Through my involvement with the Foodbank throughout the year I know that many families are struggling week by week and the extra expense of Christmas is overwhelming. Families are referred to us by local organisations who know the families and their circumstances. It’s sad that local people are in need of this help, but every year we are amazed by the generosity of the people of Chippenham."

She said: "The families coming to the food bank, have been hit by the introduction of Universal Credit. We had a lady today who said said she would not get her money back from rent arrears, and wondering how she would cope, going towards Christmas. Some people get into debt buying presents, many are already in debt. It always amazes me that in a place like Chippenham there are so many families needing help."

Donations of toys are needed for boys and girls aged up to 16. The toys and gifts must be new and unwrapped.

"We are not able to take second hand toys and would also appreciate people thinking of children aged under18 months, as this age group often gets forgotten," she added.

"We are partnering, once again, with estate agents Goodman, Warren and Beck, Wilko Chippenham, Wilko Devizes and Sainsbury’s Chippenham, as places where people can buy and donate or drop off toys.

"And new this year we are also excited to launch a new partnership with Argos Sainsbury’s and MP Michelle Donelan is also kindly providing a drop off point for donations at the office in New Road."

If you have a donation, they can also be dropped off at The Salvation Army headquarters in Foghamshire, Chippenham, on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. You can also arrange to drop off donations by appointment 01249 655458. Donations of money are also welcome and can be sent to The Salvation Army at the same address.
