Known as one of the best places to watch sports TV in Swindon, the Steam Railway pub on Newport Street has been refurbished.

New manager Steve Griffiths plans to host weekly music nights every Saturday in the run up to Christmas, together with karaoke nights, free pool on a Wednesday evening and a new pub quiz.

The Rhyl man has worked behind bars in Tenerife, London and the north west of England on-and-off since 1985.

His varied career also includes a 17 year stint as an ambulance control room manager, taking 999 calls and sending paramedics to crashes and cardiac arrests. Steve said of the Steam Railway: “I fell in love with the pub as soon as I saw it. One of the pubs I had in Preston was an ale house. This – the Steam Railway’s ale bar – is me. This is my kind of pub. It’s traditional.”

Regular Reg Hill, 52, has been drinking at the pub for 35 years: “I quite like what they’ve done with the bar. A lot of us liked the atmosphere of the old ale bar, but it did need a freshening up."

“I’ve been coming in here for a long time and I just feel at home here.”

The Steam Railway will be holding a launch for its new weekly music nights on Saturday, November 24. Free Prosecco.
