WRITER Nigel Linacre gave the first public performance of his new work, The Great War Poem, at the Cause Music and Arts Centre in Chippenham on Remembrance Sunday.

The poem tells the story of the war, its causes and consequences in 500 rhyming lines. Readers are transported from the assassination in Sarajevo to the Treaty of Versailles, and the impact on today’s world.

"I woke up a few weeks ago with a couple of lines in my mind and started to write. Hundreds of lines poured out over several days," he said.

He added: “I thought this is a great way to teach history, and then remembered that history was first taught via poetry - that’s where Homer kicked it all off. The early feedback is that it’s a great way to learn the whole war in half-an-hour."

The Great War Poem is available on Amazon and all this year’s author’s income from the title will go to Help for Heroes.
