YOUNGSTERS at Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School in Great Cheverell found themselves frantically busy, after members of the school's Crochet Club began making Remembrance poppies.

Head Mercedes Henning explained: "Under the tutelage of the Club Leader, Mrs Twentyman, the children decided to crochet 100 poppies this year to commemorate the 100 years since the end of World War 1.

"They then undertook to sell them to the school community for £1 each. The demand for the poppies was so strong that they sold out within the first couple of days and the Crochet Club had to spend every spare moment crocheting more.

"The children were crocheting in their break times, in between lessons and at every possible spare moment they could find. Each poppy was different as the children adapted the pattern and became more efficient at crafting new designs.

"In the end, they raised £150 from the sale of their poppies. All the money has been donated to the Royal British Legion.

"It has been a joy to see everyone wearing their crocheted poppies around the school with pride. We are very proud of our Crochet Club – what a great way to support both the memory of those who gave their lives in war and the work of the Royal British Legion."
