NICK and Jenny Westington are told by many of their guests they would be certain winners if they took part in TV's Four In A Bed show which pits B&B owners against each other.

But despite receiving numerous overtures from the makers of the Channel 4 series they are not sure if they are ready to lay themselves and their business open to scrutiny by viewers.

For the moment they are content to be celebrating being regional finalists in a competition to find the best B&Bs, guesthouses and boutique hotels in the country.

The couple, who both had high flying business careers before going into the hospitality industry, have run Avalon Lodge bed and breakfast for the past five years.

They were shortlisted in the hidden gem category at the eviivo awards which held its finals at Quaglino's in London.

Mr Westington, 63, said guests particularly liked the grounds of the property where hens, ducks and donkeys are kept and the fact that three of their four rooms have balconies with views over the Wiltshire countryside.

He said: "Many of our guests tell us we should do the TV show and we keep being asked to take part but I think being television they are looking for certain types of people and I am not sure we are television types.

"I am confident that things like our cleanliness would be up to scratch and the exposure it gives is fabulous but for the moment we are just happy that our Tripadvisor scores are all five stars."

Among those shortlisted in the quirkiest place to stay category for the south west was Foss Farmhouse B&B in Nettleton, near Chippenham, which has hit the headlines in recent months after every square foot of the property was turned into a popular Japanese animation.

This was enough for Caron Cooper to win the AA's Bed and Breakfast Story of the Year award.

The B&B has just two guest bedrooms but is the inspiration for a story in popular manga comic book Kiniro-Mosaic, also known as Kinmoza.

Ms Cooper said: “I have been reinvented in Japan. They have made me and my B&B into an animation over there which airs weekly."

The two Wiltshire B & Bs became regional finalists after being judgedby a panel of industry experts.

David Weston, awards judge and Chairman of the Bed & Breakfast Association said: “With over 1,000 new B&Bs opening since 2015, it is great to see that the sector is enjoying a revival. These brilliant B&Bs are diverse in what they offer, and this can be seen in the variety of nominations across the South West.”
