A DISQUALIFIED driver who gave false details to the police when questioned has been jailed for 12 weeks.

David Watkins-Rudman, aged 32, of no fixed abode in Swindon, pleaded guilty to obstructing a constable in execution of duty, driving whilst disqualified and using a vehicle without third-party insurance when he appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court.

On top of his sentence, he's been, recalled to prison for breaching a court order, given six points on his driving licence, and ordered to pay £115 to victim services plus court costs of £85.

PC Jonathan Kilburn, of the South Swindon Community Policing Team, said: “On Wednesday May 23, police stopped a Ford Transit being driven in White Horse Road, Cricklade.

“Watkins-Rudman was the driver, but he provided me with false details. He was reported for driving the vehicle without the appropriate insurance and the vehicle was seized.

"On October 17, we were contacted by the man whose name we had been incorrectly given by Watkins-Rudman, and following enquiries, we were able to prove the driver was in fact Watkins-Rudman and arrested him.

“Further enquiries also showed that on 13 March he had been stopped in Kemble Drive and the vehicle he was driving in was seized because records showed he was disqualified from driving at this point.”

“We hope this sentence sends a strong message to motorists of the importance of ensuring you have the appropriate insurance to drive a vehicle and that providing false details to police will eventually catch up with you and you will be arrested and put before the courts for your dishonesty.”
