JON Davies’ strike wasn’t enough to see Melksham Town secure what could have been a timely Southern League Division One South win at Bideford.

Davies handed Kieran Baggs’ men the lead five minutes into the second half before Billy Tucker’s goal 10 minutes from time rescued a point for the hosts.

Melksham consequently missed out on an opportunity to leapfrog Highworth Town and claim a play-off position.

Instead they remain in mid-table having secured 10 points from their first six games in step four non-league football.

In the Toolstation Premier Division, Bradford Town slipped to their third league loss on the spin after slipping up 2-1 at home to Shepton Mallet.

A goalless first half was followed by the visitors opening the scoring after applying persistent pressure through good build-up play.

Shepton doubled their lead minutes later before Daniel Price pegged a goal back for the Bobcats in the first minute of injury time.

That proved too little too late for Bradford though, who next week face league strugglers Chipping Sodbury.

Westbury experienced better fortunes though as Neil Kirkpatrick’s side triumphed 3-1 at home to league leaders Willand Rovers.

Josh Ferguson, Ricky Hulbert and Ian Jeffrey all found the back of the net to maintain Westbury’s unbeaten start to the season – securing all 21 points available from their first seven games.

In Division One, promotion candidates Corsham Town secured a one-goal win against second-placed Chard Town.

Josh Bright struck in the 21st minute before Chard struggled to find an opening throughout the remainder of the game – promoting Corsham to fourth in the division.

Devizes Town meanwhile are now level with Corsham on 15 points, though have a game in hand, after they suffered a crushing 5-1 loss at Welton Rovers.

Three second-half goals proved enough for Welton, who remain top of the division after picking up five wins from their opening eight games.

Chippenham Park’s below-par form continued meanwhile as they slipped up 2-1 at home to fellow strugglers Bristol Telephones while Calne Town remain in the top half after defeating Sherborne Town 2-0.

Warminster meanwhile missed out on a chance to move into fifth after losing 3-1 away at Wincanton.

In the Hellenic League, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were knocked out of the Challenge Cup after losing 4-0 away at Tuffley Rovers.

Pewsey Vale were also on the losing end of a result, slipping to a 3-1 loss at home to Brimscombe and Thrupp.

One team did manage to progress to the next round though.

Kevin Bridgeman’s Malmesbury Victoria experienced better fortunes as they won 3-1 at home to Chalvey Sports to make Challenge Cup progress.
