A POLICE car believed to be one of a number taking part in a high speed chase on Tuesday evening in Devizes crashed into a garden fence and demolished part of a wall.

The accident happened at about 10.15pm in Nursteed Road when a ford Mondeo Estate police car crashed into the fence of a house next to the Nursteed Centre.

Part of a wall to the Nursteed Centre and BT post were also damaged after the driver is believed to have lost control.

A neighbour in Nursteed Road said: "I was in my living room when I heard a car travelling very fast. It must have been about 100 MPH. I looked out and saw a number of police cars giving chase. At least one of them had sirens going.

"My daughter then came running down stairs to say one of the police cars had crashed. I went outside to see what was happening but it did not appear anyone was injured."

A spokesman for Wiltshire police could not confirm the police vehicle in the accident had been part of a pursuit but said: "A car which had driven down Nursteed Road at around 10.15pm was being driven at speed and officers were attempting to pursue it. The police car in the accident was a Ford Mondeo Estate."

Wiltshire police say the car being chased was part of an investigation being carried out by Hampshire police.

Two years ago a the same house was badly damaged when a car went out of control and smashed through the fence and into a wall. At the time the homeowners spoke of about the dangers of cars travelling too fast down Nursteed Road.

They had been out when that accident happened and returned home to find devastation. Their home had to undergo major repairs.

This time the police car was stopped from further damaging the house by a wall at the entrance to the Nursteed Centre and Southbroom St James primary school.
