PREPARATIONS are well underway for Calne’s 45th music and arts festival with more than 30 performances and exhibitions taking place during the packed ten-day programme.

Calne Music and Arts Festival, one of the longest-running festivals in Wiltshire, will take place from October 4-14, and will showcase a wide variety of local talent from artists and musicians from a range of groups, clubs and schools in the town and surrounding villages as well as others from further afield.

It boasts something for all ages with a range of performances from bands, choirs, orchestras, as well as a showcase of artwork, photography and poetry.

The opening of the festival for the general public begins with a concert on October 5 at 7.30pm at Marden House where trio Um Sete Um will perform in a style similar to jazz but with a blend of African rhythm and classic forms included.

Other highlights include a clay workshop for children on October 6 where they will learn how to make a pinch pot in the shape of their favourite animal, and a performance from Calne Choral Society at at St Mary’s Church, also on October 6.

The concert will also be the premiere of the Jazz Mass, composed by local composer James Harpham.

The Marlborough College Music Scholars return for their annual concert on October 8 with a mixture of ensemble and solo pieces.

Primary schools from Calne and surrounding villages will come together again on October 12 for their celebration of song at the John Bentley School.

The end of the festival on October 14 will be marked with a Festival Evensong.

Calne Music and Arts Festival president Carole Browne said: “The tickets went on sale at the end of August and ticket sales have gone well.

“They really pick up a few weeks before the festival.

“There are about 35 events over ten days so there is a lot for people to consider.

“I am very excited about this year, we have a marvellous programme. It is really varied and has something for most people and is really good quality.

“Most of them are local performers or have a local connection to Calne.”
