DOG walkers are planning a protest to show their frustration at the road improvements on the A350, which they say have made it impossible to cross the road safely.

The protest, fronted by Odette Nelson, of Drake Crescent, Chippenham, aims to demonstrate the dangers people face attempting to cross Cepen Way to get to footpaths across local fields.

This has been a regular route for dog walkers in the area. Now they say the improvements made by Wiltshire Council since 2014, making the section of the A350 north of Chippenham from Badger Roundabout to Chequers Junction into a dual carriageway, have made the crossing too dangerous.

Mrs Nelson said: “The new junction on the dual carriageway makes it impossible for us to be seen when trying to cross the road.

“Since the work has been done, the road moves from a double dual carriageway into a single.

“The speed limit is 40mph but cars coming off the double are sometimes travelling up to 60mph

“Just last week I spoke to four dog walkers who had narrow misses when attempting to cross the road.

“My dog is 15 and a slow walker now. Sometimes I must pick him up and carry him across the road.

“We all live in Drake Crescent and have enjoyed taking our dogs down the walkway. We often go as a group. One man who has lived, and enjoyed the walk for many years can’t even get across anymore.

“We highlighted our frustration with Wiltshire Council but nothing has been done. A protest seems to be the option left.”

No specific date has yet been set for the protest to take place.

Local Cllr Peter Hutton said: “I took the issue to the highways committee however, the ongoing work for A350 is not on that particular stretch of road so residents will have to wait until its finished before the council can investigate any issues. Their issues have been noted.”
