More than 500 food-serving establishments in Sutton have been formally warned over their hygiene standards, according to new official figures.

Statistics published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) show 510 premises have received written warnings, close to a third (30.8 percent) of the total 1,652 which are registered.

But this ranks Sutton eighth out of 12 in south London, with Croydon first with 1,258, followed by Southwark (1,141) and then Lewisham (781).

When looking at all London authorities, the borough is 25th overall out of 33 but neighbouring Croydon is only second to Tower Hamlets by 21 (1,279).

In Sutton, a total of 17 have been given hygiene improvement notices, six have voluntarily closed, and just one has been stripped of its licence.

When filtering establishments in London which were "broadly compliant" with food hygiene standards, the borough comes in at 86.7 percent.

That’s second-lowest in south London, ahead of Croydon (85.36) and 27th overall out of all 33 London authorities.
