TWO men have been sentenced following a burglary in Colerne.

At 2.15am on August 7, Wiltshire Police received a report that there was a burglary in progress at the Premier store on Market Place.

When PC Fletcher and PC Gratton arrived at the scene they discovered a smashed window. A man ran out of the store and threw a large bag at one of the officers.

He was identified as Matthew Cook, 39, of no fixed address in Bath.

A second man wearing a balaclava, later identified as Shane Reed, 36, from Whitehead Street, Swindon was found on the roof of the shop.

When officers searched the men they found keys to a black Mercedes parked outside which had a crowbar inside.

They were charged with burglary and failing to provide a sample, and appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on August 29.

Cook was sentenced 18 weeks in prison, ordered to pay £263.95 compensation and was disqualified from driving for 17 months.

Reed received a two year community order, was ordered to do 25 days community work and pay £263.95 compensation, and was disqualified from driving for 36 months.

DC Jo Chesshire said: "Thanks to the quick thinking of the member of public calling the police and the actions taken at the scene by PC Fletcher and PC Gratton who were first to arrive, two men were caught red handed.

"This is another great example of the public being our eyes and ears on the ground and calling suspicious incidents into the police as they are happening, giving local Community Police Teams the chance to catch criminals in the act.

"Chippenham Crime Tasking Team worked closely with Chippenham CPT to make sure these criminals got punished by the courts."
