WEEKLY beginner running groups aimed at people keen to pull on their trainers for the first time will be launched this autumn in Chippenham and Pewsey.

Last year more than 800 people took their first strides towards getting healthier in running groups across the county, and now four new groups, including one each in Pewsey and Chippenham, will be launched to focus on people new to the sport.

John Thomson, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for leisure, said: “I’d urge anyone looking to get fit to give one of these courses a go, it could make a real difference to your health and wellbeing.

“We couldn’t support any of these groups without the great work of volunteers who are helping more people to get active.

The Westbury Get Wiltshire Walking group, which formed in 2012, has also been praised for getting between 30 and 40 people a week active.

Cllr Thompson added: "The walks offer an opportunity for increased physical activity.

“They are a great chance to meet new people and also to learn more about the local area.”

Chippenham runners will meet weekly at Stanley Park every Thursday form September 13 to November 15 from 6.15-7.15pm while running sessions in Pewsey will begin from January, with dates yet to be confirmed.
