A TEAM of volunteers are urging motorists to slow down when driving through the village of Burbage, after they were shocked at the results of their recent speed survey.

Burbage Community Speed Watch recently found that in just one 30 minute session, they saw 17 cars pass through the village doing well over 40mph in peak rush hour times.

The entire village is a 30mph limit zone.

A spokesman from Burbage Community Speed Watch said: “We take this volunteering very seriously, so it is with extreme urgency that we must all act to get back in control of the speed that some drivers are doing in the village.

“At the time of our session, children were walking and cycling to school.

“This cannot go on, there will be an incident.

“We all understand it might not necessarily be local residents speeding, but if we all stick to the speed limit, we will hopefully maintain standards.

“Most of us have cars and have busy lives, but just think about the lovely village and the lovely community we live in, give yourself an extra five minutes.

“It could make all the difference to someone.”

Community Speed Watch groups monitor speeding in their communities and all information recorded is passed to the police.

Volunteers work closely with Community Policing Teams, supported by the Special Constabulary Roads Policing Unit.

Community Speed Watch only takes place where there is an identified speeding issue in a 20mph, 30mph or 40mph speed limits.

All volunteers are trained by Traffic Management Policing Officers to monitor traffic speed and must comply with a code of practice. The Burbage Community Speed Watch team are looking for more volunteers to join them.
