MALMESBURY residents who want to see budget superstore Lidl built in the town showed their support for the planning application at the Market Cross on Friday.

Residents heard details of Lidl's planning application which was submitted in March, and now includes a number of suggestions made by members of the community, to ensure customers can safely and easily access the store on foot, bike and car.

They were able to sample some of Lidl's products, which provided a taste of what the new supermarket could bring to the town if planning permission is granted.

Lidl UK’s Regional Head of Property, Glen Stidever said: "We're delighted to have received fantastic support for our plans, with over 350 local residents submitting comments on the Council's website in favour of a new Lidl store.

"For a long time, Malmesbury has been of interest to us and our new store will help us to improve shopping choice and enhance the retail offering in the area. We look forward to receiving a decision from the Council in due course."

Lisa Clifford from Malmesbury said "I support a Lidl in Malmesbury because we need an affordable option. We all currently drive to Cirencester Lidl so it would save our petrol usage and the environment if we can shop on the door step."

Karon Vizor said she could see herself walking to the new Lidl: "I like the way they plan to create a new footpath and staggered crossing to make it safe and easy for pedestrians to walk there."

Jo Thornbury, added: "I'd love a Lidl in Malmesbury because there are new houses being built all around, the town is expanding. The current high street doesn't support our day to day needs."

Lidl hopes a decision will be made on the application later this summer.
