PLANS for 110 new homes to be built in Corsham will be unveiled today at a public consultation event, and some residents have already voiced their concerns.

The plans for up to 110 open market and affordable homes to be built on an ex-Ministry of Defence site off Rowan Lane, Westwells, Neston, will be put to villagers.

The proposals outline the housing development, which would have provision for 30 per cent affordable housing, as well as plans for an open space and woodland area, and a play area.

News of the potential development has caused the Neston Action Group to revive as they believe there isn’t a need for another housing estate.

Resident Tim Amwack, of Moor Green, expressed concerns about the amount of new traffic coming in and out of the village potentially putting strain on the road network.

“We already accommodate the daily arrival of more than 2,000 employees who are based at MOD Corsham, which is opposite the proposed site, and I fear for the safety of all pedestrians and road users,” he said. “Potentially a further couple of hundred vehicles would be making journeys at the same times of day.

“What is the necessity for yet another housing estate which is within a mile of the extensive Potley Rise and Park Lane developments that are both creating enormous quantities of houses?”

But it is hoped that residents will attend the consultation so their views can be considered before plans are submitted to Wiltshire Council.

Responding to villagers’ concerns, planning consultant leading the project Richard Brown, of Richard Brown Planning Limited, said: “Our transport consultants will be undertaking an assessment of the potential impact on the local highway network.

“In addition, to transport issues, our team of consultants will also provide technical evidence in relation to landscape ecology, drainage, noise and air quality.

“The provision of both open market and affordable homes is considered to be of significant benefit to the local community, in particular the proposal of 30 per cent affordable homes.

“National planning policy encourages engagement with the public on development proposals and The consultation will give local people an opportunity to comment on the proposals.”

The public consultation is taking place today at Neston Memorial Hall, Pool Green, from 3pm-7pm.
