BOOKS glorious books were celebrated in the form of another hugely successful edition of the scarecrow trail in Kington Langley this weekend.

Several thousand people came along to the village to go round the 1.5 mile trail, which had a book theme, that featured 88 scarecrows.

Steve Howe, known as the Chair of Scare, said numbers were up on previous years and he was delighted that thousands of pounds will go to local causes as well.

“It was another hugely successful event. The scarecrows were just outstanding. The quality just keeps getting better,” he said.

“The children were so engaged which was brilliant.”

The people’s choice winner was the Warhorse scarecrow, made by the Turek and Longley-Brown families, Jamie and Henry Dent won the children’s category for, Room on the Broom, and the best new builders one went too the Jago family for The tiger who came to tea.

James Cunningham, eight, of Middle Common, spent almost a week making his Captain Underpants scarecrow.

He said: “It is one of my favourite books so I wanted to make it. I am really happy with how it looks. It also has a fart sensor by his arm.”

His elder brother Ben, 13, put together his own Raven’s Gate scarecrow entry from the Anthony Horrowitz books.

“I am a big fan of his books. It took a while to put together. I think it is better than James’ one,” he said.

25 per cent of the profits from the event will go to Thrombosis UK and some more will go to local causes.

Catherine Alexander, of Malmesbury, added: “These scarecrows are amazing. This is the third time we have come down to this and it is always brilliant.”

Local resident, Simon Cooper, said: “I have been here for 15 years and the standard seems to keep on getting better.”
