MELKSHAM Town manager Kieran Baggs admits the weather helped his men out of a sticky situation this weekend after their clash with Bradford Town was abandoned.

The Wiltshire derby had kicked off as planned before heavy rain brought an end to proceedings at the interval.

In the opening 45 minutes things were less than ideal for Baggs as Bradford stormed into a 2-0 lead through an own goal and a Matt Morris strike, despite being reduced to 10 men. However, over the break the heavens opened at Oakfields as the referee brought the contest to an early end.

On Easter Monday, Bradford Town’s home game with Hallen was postponed, while Melksham lost 4-2 away at Cribbs.

“It’s not the best Bank Holiday weekend I’ve ever had. The game on Friday was one of those rare things where the pitch was playable when the referee turned up,” he said.

“He did say that if the weather worsened at half time then he would call the game off and that is what happened.

“Obviously from a Bradford point of view, you would be gutted. We were 2-0 down, we still had 45 minutes left and they were down to 10-men.

“I always fancied us to get back into us, but it is a big task because we were 2-0 down and that gave Bradford something to hold on to."

While the weather bailed them out on Good Friday, they had no such luck during their defeat to Cribbs on Easter Monday, as Gary Higdon’s brace couldn’t prevent a first defeat of 2018.

“There were no excuses for Monday’s performance and the boys know that,” he added.

“It was completely unacceptable, and I made sure that they knew that but over the course of the season they have been superb.

“There is going to be the odd occasion where the performance slips but it is important we bounce back from it.

“We are still in second place, there is still plenty to play for and there are going to be many twists and turn before the end of the season.”

Melksham return to action on Saturday with a trip to league-leaders Street as they start a run of four consecutive away fixtures, while Bradford will now host Hallen on Saturday.
