CHILDREN’S Groups are £2000 better off after a Marlborough Area Board volunteering event gave away cash for worthy causes.

Four lucky causes were awarded up to £500 each after they won over a voting audience at the town’s Area Board meeting.

Action for the River Kennet will fund a fishing project for young and vulnerable people and Phoenix Brass band will buy a new youth tuba for keen musicians. Marlborough Tennis Club will fund a youth coaching project and Savernake Explorer Scouts is holding an adventure weekend.

Juliet Bonser, of the Savernake Explorers, said:"The £500 grant will subsidise camp costs ensuring affordability for all our young people.

"Camping trips give a fantastic opportunity to use practical skills such as cooking, navigation and fire-lighting and also allows new chances to develop qualities including confidence, teamwork and empathy skills."

During the volunteering evening over 60 people spoke to local organisations that support young people.Andrew Jack, of the Area Board said: "It was a real success and four groups left with funding they needed."
