Kids had the chance to reconnect with the holidays of their ancestors in an activity session at the Steam museum.

In a session called 'Are We There Yet?', primary school children were asked to pick out their favourite 1930s holiday locations serviced by the Great Western Railway, and design a poster for them.

Debbie Charman, the education officer for Steam, said: "We are just celebrating GWR’s influence, and the tradition of their trains opening up coastal towns in the south of England.

"GWR had an enormous influence in providing trips to towns in Devon and Cornwall, and the factory itself used to have ten days holiday to go on holiday to the coast.

"The posters are considered artworks in their own right – we just think it is a great way of getting the children involved in that.

"It goes along with our current exhibition, which looks at the art of the posters.

"It’s been very successful, with lots of kids participating."

Jade Walker, marketing and PR officer at the museum, said: "We ask the children to look at the special exhibition that’s here, and these sessions are focused on and linked to the exhibition.

"We are asking children to have a look at the network map from the 1930s, and asking if there is anywhere that they have been. The children are then producing their own holiday destination posters."

With around 30 children taking part in the morning session, and more due in the afternoon, the opportunity to recreate a bit of history was clearly proving a draw.

Sarah, who was there with her husband and two children Lily, 5, and Max, 2, said: "We are annual members at the museum and, in Max, we have a big train fan over there.

"Their grandfather used to work on the King Edward."

Talking about the activities on offer, Lily said: "I’m colouring in these signal posts with my little brother."

GWR offered services to Devon and Cornwall in the early 20th century, turning the likes of Torquay, Newquay, Penzance and St Ives into popular resorts.

The factory also used to close for a two-week period every year, with discounted trips to the coast available to staff.
