THE Chippenham Pit Stop on the M4 has been named as Britain's Truck Stop of the Year.

The accolade, which was awarded by Truckstop News on Friday, is the culmination of a three-year drive by the Pit Stop crew led by managing director David Hatherell.

Chippenham MP Michelle Donelan presented the trophy to Mr Hatherell on Friday during the special celebration.

"When a driver arrives after a day on the road, all he or she wants is a friendly welcome, a hot shower, clean facilities, a decent home cooked meal and a good night's sleep," he said.

"If you add to those basic needs an understanding that they may have had frustrating day, be missing home, or not feeling great, then you can really start looking after them as individuals and ensure that they leave feeling ready for another day."

The ethos of caring for every driver was something the judges latched onto with Pip Dunn, the editor of Truckstop News, calling Chippenham Pit Stop "a very upmarket establishment."
