WINNING the toss was crucial for Malmesbury's victory on Saturday, believes captain BK Majumder.

They comfortably recorded their fourth, and most surprising, win of the season after putting their second place hosts into bat.

He said: "It was much easier for us after we won the toss because, after the rain, we had to put them into bat because the wicket was wet.

"It definitely gave us the advantage and from then, we were clear favourites."

Majumder was the star with the ball, as he took 4-14, with Ollie Langton collecting 3-38. Sam Higginbottom (2-24) and Phil Cook (1-19) completed the rout.

But, despite the impressive bowling display, the captain was not pleased with everything.

He said: "All the way through I was very confident, but I was not happy with the fielding because we dropped several catches and missed some run out chances.

"There is still some room for improvement."

With a low total to chase, Majumder moved himself down the order to allow some of his team to regain their form with the bat.

Sam Higginbottom (27), Christopher Hurst (27) and Max Sparrow (49no) vindicated his decision.

"Most of the batsmen are out of touch so they needed some batting practice, and it worked for us," he said.

"Max and Sam scored some great runs and were very consistent."

The captain is also sticking to his word of bringing the youngsters through by handing teenage bowler Tom Pickering his debut.

More are expected to feature this season, but maybe not at third place Great Bedwyn on Saturday.

Majumder said: "He did very well and I still want to play some more. Great Bedwyn are a good team with good players and as soon as we are certain to stay up, they will play."
