A PUB on the outskirts of Devizes, which makes sure that no pooch is ever in the dog house, has been named the most mutt friendly in the south west.

The Fox and Hounds in Nursteed Road was voted the best in the region in the DogBuddy dog-friendly awards.

Tenants Justin Finning and Deborah Noakes, who own five dogs including four Great Danes even offer free Sunday lunches for pooches.

Ms Noakes said: "Being dog-friendly is a massive part of what we do, it’s our biggest unique selling point, not to mention a way of life.

"It’s not just about patting dogs when they come in and giving them a treat, it’s about providing a safe, secure and non-threatening environment for dogs.

"One of our regulars was always very fond of dogs, but terrified due to being bitten as a child. He wanted to get over his phobia, so we introduced him gradually to a number of regular doggy customers, gently increasing the size of the dogs he was meeting until he could cope with our Great Danes sitting on him and ultimately wrestling with him.

"It was an amazing transformation to watch, and now he has a dog of his own and has never looked back."

Organisers said that the Fox and Hounds had proved to be well-loved in the Devizes community with friendly staff and little touches that make the pub the perfect pit-stop for a pint after a dog walk.

The only other pub in Swindon to make on the top ten of the list was the Red Lion in Swindon.

Richard Setterwall, founder and CEO of DogBuddy said: “For the second year running, DogBuddy – with the help of dog lovers up and down the country - has been searching for the best of the best when it comes to dog-friendly pubs, with The Fox and Hounds, we’ve found just that.

"The superb service demonstrated shows a real consideration for dog welfare and happiness, which we at DogBuddy value above all.

"The whole DogBuddy pack is proud to congratulate The Fox and Hounds on winning the dog-friendly pub award for south west, and hopes that the awards will inspire dog owners country-wide to discover and support their local pubs."

The Fox and Hounds welcomes dogs no matter what the weather and provides water inside and out and biscuits on the bar.

Ms Noakes said: "Dogs eat free and full roast dinners are served for pups every Sunday. We have a large secure garden with plenty of space to run around."

Those who voted praised the pub. One said: "Honestly the most welcoming and friendly pubs I have ever visited – great beer, amazing food and such warm hospitality."

Another said: "Our dog loves it there , a very friendly doggy pub, they have five Great Danes and a rescue as well, and great hosts."
