IN your front page article (October 12) it is stated that Marlborough railway station was closed as part of the unpopular Beeching cuts. This is incorrect.
While the closure of railway stations at many places, including those at Devizes and Calne, were foretold in the Beeching Report, this document was published in 1963.
The passenger service at Marlborough railway station had already ceased two years earlier in September 1961.
And, for the record, I actually travelled on the last south-bound train from Marlborough to Collingbourne in 1961.
