PANCAKE-flippers from businesses across Bradford on Avon braved the rain to take part in this year’s Pancake Race.

Ten competitors from the town lined up at the start by Town Bridge on the rainy Tuesday (November 28) afternoon, with members of the public eagerly stood in anticipation to see who would batter the rest and be crowned winner of this year's race.

Runners from CS Bowyer, Parson’s Bakery, the Fat Fowl, the Swan Hotel, Green Life, Christine’s Sustainable Supermarket, the Secret Garden, Fetch pet shop, Poppies Tea Rooms and Gilou’s Café stood with frying pans in hand whilst Trowbridge Town Crier Trevor Heeks told them the rules.

"It is very windy today so make sure to watch your pancakes,” Mr Heeks said as he rang the bell and started the race off.

From the start, Harry Hamlin from CS Bowyer headed out in front, followed by Christian Smith from Gilou’s. After reaching the other side of the bridge, the runners flipped their pancakes and then made a mad dash for the finish line.

First to cross the line was Mr Hamlin from CS Bowyer, shortly followed by Mr Smith from Gilou's and then Andy Moverley from Parsons.

Councillor John Potter said: “This will be my last event, it is quite sad but it is a jolly good bit of fun for everyone in Bradford on Avon.”

Mayor of Bradford on Avon Alison Craddock presented Mr Hamlin with a frying pan from the former The Shambles shop Tillions, which CS Bowyer will now keep until the next race in 2018.

Mr Hamlin said: “It feels good to win the race and bring the pan back to Bowyers, we won it in 2014 so now we have it for another year.”
