A SIX-month-old Labrador puppy, who is named after Chippenham, is visiting the town to say thank you to the people who raised the money to buy him.
Sainsbury’s asked people and groups to suggest names for a new guide dog puppy, after the Corsham and Chippenham Guide Dog branch raised more than £5,000 in the store.
The 9th Chippenham Brownies were chosen for the honour, and they came up with the name Chipper.
The playful pup is being trained by puppy walker David Nash and his wife Janice, who have already met staff at the store and will visit the Brownie pack later this month.
“I think it’s an excellent name and we’re very much looking forward to going to the Brownies,” said Mr Nash, a puppy walker for six years.
“Children are wonderful with dogs and they must be really thrilled that their name has been accepted.”
Mr Nash has been looking after Chipper since he was two months old. His job is to teach him fundamental skills for a guide dog, such as stopping at kerbs when crossing the road and how to get on and off public transport safely, as well as general socialisation skills and how to live in a household.
After a year, Chipper will be sent for more intensive training and at the age of two could become a fully-trained guide dog.
Sainsbury’s Chippenham store manager, Val Atwill, said: “Thank you to David for bringing Chipper into the store today and to the Brownies for choosing such a fitting name.
“Chipper is a great example of how Sainsbury’s supports charities and its involvement in the local community.
“Lastly thank you to colleagues and customers who have donated to the charity.”
