WROUGHTON is doing its bit with its own Poppy Appeal.

A table has been put up Ellendune Community Centre so residents can donate towards the Royal British Legion charity, which supports past and present war heroes.

Liz Derbyshire, a RBL member, said: “The Poppy Appeal has been taken over by the Wroughton and District branch of the Royal British Legion.

“We have got a table in the Ellendune foyer of all the goodies, which include badges, wristbands and information.

“It will run right until the appeal finishes on November 14, so Wroughton is all set for the appeal which has always been important for the area.

“Wroughton always ran its own Poppy Appeal but it was taken over by the Swindon branch three years ago. Wroughton has now taken it back under its wing which is really nice.”

Remembrance Sunday will take place on November 13. Every year, the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal raises tens of thousands of pounds for servicemen and women and their families.

The poppy has become a symbol of respect for those who have died during the First and Second World Wars, as well as the millions of other people affected by war. Poppies were said to be the first flower to emerge on Flanders Fields.
