FOR many years I wondered whether it was really necessary to slow down to 30mph as I passed Forest and Sandridge Primary School at the foot of Sandridge Hill going towards Melksham.
When I was passing on my way to work, it was 6.30am and there were no kids there.
When I was passing on the way home it was 5.30pm and there were no kids there.
When I was passing at the weekend there were no kids there.
For 12 weeks of the year the children were on holiday and weren’t there, and when school was in, apart from arrival and departure times, surely they were in class in the safe care of their teachers?
Then I spotted the school being knocked down and houses built.
Now, the same children could be living in the new houses on the same site next to the same road. They could be unsupervised all evening, at weekends and playing anywhere in the vicinity during the school holidays.
And now the speed limit has been raised to 40mph.
