I WAS astonished to read Mr Boaler’s letter concerning Calne Library enhancements in last week’s letters page.

Consultation on all community area campus issues throughout Wiltshire is carried out at and through the Community Area Boards. Calne is no exception and the plans for an investment of £200,000 in Calne library were published and discussed at the Calne Area Board on January 26, which I understand that Mr Boaler did not attend.

It is Wiltshire Council policy to make libraries accessible for all and Calne library is no exception.

The automated access system is to enhance and extend the current Calne library opening hours and the same accessibility to all swipe library card holders will apply.

It is extremely disappointing that Calne Labour group members are behaving in such a negative manner in response to this investment to deliver improvements and greater use for the local community; particularly when in so many local authorities libraries are being closed, or the hours of access are being reduced.

Wiltshire Council is improving community facilities across the county and I am pleased to update that work is underway on the planned improvements to Calne library.
