A RECORD amount of runners thronged the streets of Corsham for the town's annual 10k run on Sunday, in glorious sunshine

More than 1,100 adults entered the 34th race, which set off at 11am from Corsham Football Club, with 200 youngsters taking part in the fun run 2k dash beforehand.

The racers were sent off by Bath Rugby player Ross Batty, and were preceded by a small cavalcade of classic cars travelling around the route. The race, organised by Corsham Running Club, has raised about £6,000 for charity.

Race director Alex Fogwill, who has been planning the run since October, said: "We had another fantastic event and the weather was superb too so it could not have been much better really.

"The atmosphere was brilliant. It was great to see people thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the support we received is wonderful. We have had a lot of great feedback and I am very thankful for that. After months of organising, to see it come together like this was great.

“It was quite a spectacle and this is a lovely way to maybe introduce people into running, start that ambition and also raise money for charitable causes. We have tweaked this event each year to make it better than the last and I think we are doing that. The profile of it is still rising and I certainly had a good old time.

“Our team of 80 helpers have perfected it over the years. It is a wonderful community event and has become incredibly popular and we will be back hopefully bigger than ever next year.”

A wind band played at the town's memorial before and after the event, which was bolstered by the support of a plethora of volunteers including the town's sea scouts handing out water, and the army and the air cadets as marshals.

Ed Drall and Oscar Wilson of Bathford Cricket Club ran round in their cricketing gear to raise funds for their recently refurbished pavilion.

"It was tough, I am not going to lie," said Mr Drall. "Running in all that was difficult but it was a good laugh and well worth it. We had a lot of support from other runners. Maybe next year we will bring bats too."

Calne Running Club member Simon Nott came home comfortably in first place to win the event for the fourth time in five years.

Each finisher received a goody bag, a running t-shirt and a bottle of Box Steam Brewery ale.
