STORM Imogen caused upset in Devizes on Monday when its force split in half a flowering cherry tree in a prominent position in the town centre.
Devizes Town Council's gardening experts examined the tree at Pennybank flower bed opposite the town hall in St John's Street and decided it could not be saved.
The council's direct services manager Sarah Williams said: "There was a lot of sadness as it was such a beautiful tree but for safety reasons it had to come down."
She said councillors would discuss planting a replacement.
