A STRETCH of the A3102 at Mile Elm, near Calne, was closed after a car crashed into a telephone pole, leaving residents nearby without a phone or internet service.

Wiltshire Police received a call at 8.49pm on Sunday after the crash, which left overhead cables in the road. The police kept the road closed until BT arrived to fix the pole and wiring. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

Sharon Burton, of Mile Elm, has campaigned for safer driving on the road after the high number of crashes that have occurred.

Mrs Burton said: “We are trying to raise awareness and get the council to do something about it.

"They don’t seem to know how dangerous this road is. Nothing substantial has been done even though there was a fatality. A sign has been put up and there have been lines painted on the road, but that just isn’t sufficient.”

In March 2014, a 43-year-old mother-of-three, Tracey Rooke, of Worton, died after crashing into a lorry. The crash happened outside Mrs Burton’s home, who stayed with Mrs Rooke until she died.

"We are fed up of it," Mrs Burton added.

"My neighbours have had lots of damage to their property. Every time you hear a loud noise you expect the worst and think will we have to help? Has someone died? It is not pleasant.

"I have two boys and it has totally put them off driving. It is a really serious problem and nothing productive seems to be happening to deal with it. There is another fatality just waiting to happen.”

Previously councillors have stated the recorded amount of accidents does not justify any intervention.

Councillor John Thomson, speaking shortly after the fatal accident, said: “Our annual monitoring of collisions on the highway indicated that Mile Elm is not yet at a level that would justify intervention from our safety scheme budget.

“The speed at which motorists choose to travel is not so much governed by the posted speed limit, but more by how they perceive local conditions.”
