POLICE and waterways officials are investigating this morning after an elderly man was found dead in the Kennet and Avon Canal near Devizes.
By later morning as the sun shone on the canal it was business as usual for the nearby cafe and visitors to famous Caen Hill flight of locks.
But just before 8am this morning police were called to Lock 43 following a report that the body of an elderly man had been found in the water.
This morning officers from the Canal and Rivers Trust were at the scene but were unable to comment on the incident.
Earlier a section of towpath close to the lock was cordoned off while paramedics and police officers investigated.
Wiltshire Police could not confirm if the dead man was a boater or someone using the towpath.
"Officers do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances at this time," said a spokesman.
"Formal identification has not yet been completed and officers are in the process of contacting the next of kin."
