JOHN of Gaunt School teacher Mike Hunt organised a day of fundraising activities to support the Nepal Earthquake Appeal, after spending time in the country 10 years ago.

The fundraising event was held just before the half term at the end of May and saw pupils take part in a range of games, including sponge the teacher, and organise a cake sale.

Mr Hunt, who teaches maths and geography at the Trowbridge school, decided to raise money for the appeal after spending a few months in one of the most badly damaged villages when he visited the country in 2005.

During his time in Nepal, Mr Hunt stayed with a friend who lived there before moving to the UK and the £350 raised by the school will be passed on to him when his visits Nepal at the end of the year.

Mr Hunt said: “I spent a few months in Nepal in 2005 and I stayed in one of the villages that was badly damaged by the earthquake. When I found out that my friend was trying to raise money to send to the village I thought it would be good for the school to do something.

“He is going out to Nepal in October time and will be putting the money to good use. Some of it has already been sent out to his sister, who used to buy stationary for the local school.

“It is great to know how the money is being used and see a tangible result. The fundraising day was a great success and the pupils really enjoyed all the activities, especially sponge the teacher.

“I did a PowerPoint for the pupils beforehand to talk to them a bit about why we were doing the fundraising and give them background information. The earthquake was devastating and it was really sad to see the damage it caused.”

Nepal has been receiving emergency aid support ever since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck at the end of April, with the region still suffering from aftershocks from the natural disaster.
