Trowbridge community stalwart and regular charity fundraiser Molly Hopkins has died aged 84.

Mrs Hopkins was born in Trowbridge in 1930, one of ten children born to George and Norah Parkins. She was educated at Park Street Infants and Newtown Junior School.

She was awarded a scholarship to the Victoria Technical Institute, where she learned the organisational skills that she would later put to good use as a secretary and PA.

At the age of 18 she became Akela for the 2nd Trowbridge Wolf Cubs, a position she held for three years, taking the youngsters to campsite jamborees and raising money to help fund the group.

Mrs Hopkins married at the age of 22 and had three sons, Terry, Tim and Robin. She was also grandmother to Aimee, Ben, Lucy, Thomas, Emily, Adam, Christopher and Oliver.

She helped Nelson Haden Boys School organise its school fetes and this eventually led to Mrs Hopkins joining the Trowbridge Carnival Committee.

She served on the committee for more than ten years, holding the position of chairman twice, as well as being secretary and a committee member.

Mrs Hopkins, who loved playing and watching golf, was often referred to as Mrs Carnival when leading the lantern procession for children, an event she always enjoyed.

She was also a member of the women’s section of the Royal British Legion and the Help the Aged committee, for which she produced a show to raise funds for the organisation.

Following the success of the show, Mrs Hopkins, as co-leader of the Lyra Girls with her sister Moira, started putting on two shows a year at the Civic Hall to raise money for several medical charities.

She was also a founding member of the Trowbridge/Leer Twinning Association and retired as organiser of the Studley Green Day Care Centre at the end of October 2013, after being involved with it for more than 25 years.

Mrs Hopkins died on January 31 at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. Her funeral will take place at St James’ Church tomorrow (20) at 3pm, followed by a private cremation at Semington.

Family flowers only, with donations in her memory to Wiltshire Air Ambulance c/o D J Bewley Funeral Directors.
