THE Wiltshire Blind Association is marking this week’s National Eye Health Week by moving to a new home.

The charity will be now be known as Wiltshire Sight and be based at its new, dedicated centre at the Browfort campus in Devizes.

For more than 95 years Wiltshire Blind Association has supported blind and partially-sighted people throughout the county.

It will be relaunched under the new name tomorrow when the charity’s president Lady Lansdowne will officially open the new offices.

With new services such as children’s and family activities, an early intervention programme and sight loss information workshops, as well as supporting the 1,500 registered blind and partially-sighted people in Wiltshire, the charity felt it was time to update its name and brand.

Leanne Hubbard, chief executive for Wiltshire Blind Association, said: “We want to reach out to more people, whatever their degree of visual impairment, because we believe no one should have to deal with sight loss alone and unsupported.

“Many people have told us that sight loss is a more inclusive term than blind and will help to broaden the appeal of our services so that more people will benefit.

“I am excited about our new-look organisation and our future plans. Our new, dedicated centre features state-of-the-art low vision aids and the latest in assistive technology products and is open daily for people to pop in to try out.”

Zurich Insurance workers in Swindon have worked with the charity to develop the new brand and image as part of their employer-supported volunteering scheme, where employees donate time and skills to assist local charities and community groups.

The new centre for the charity, St Lucy’s Sight Centre in Bath Road, is open to visitors every day from 9.30am to 3pm, with a resource and technology open morning on Fridays with someone on hand to demonstrate the equipment.
