With reference to the letter in the Gazette, July 3, from Jane Horsell, I think reference to an old photo of Station Hill before 1910 in the book 100 Pictures of Chippenham Past by the Civic Society, page 78, will explain the bulge in the road.
My grandfather was born in one of the railway cottages as his father was the crossing keeper at Peckingell. The cottages were probably demolished between 1969 and 1972 as they are listed in the 1969 street directory, but not 1972.
