Staff and students at St John’s School, Marlborough, were taken by surprise when one of a group of visiting students from Marlborough, New Zealand, turned out to be a New Zealand’s Got Talent winner.
Clara Van Wel bagged the top spot on the TV talent show competition last year when she was 15, winning $100,000, a car and a recording contract.
She was one of a group of girls from Marlborough Girls College, New Zealand on a three-week European Classical Studies Tour.
The group’s first stop on the tour was in Marlborough, where the students and teachers stayed with host families for three nights.
After a day trip to Bath and Avebury, the school welcomed the visitors who led an assembly in front of 550 St John’s students, starting with a rendition of New Zealand’s National Anthem followed by a presentation about their school.
The girls took part in a range of lessons at St John’s and then entertained students in the amphitheatre with Maori songs before a hastily-organised performance from Clara including her recently released single Wait For Me.
