POLICE have been snapping valuables left in cars around Devizes in a bid to warn about thefts from vehicles.

Officers have been highlighting the problem of people leaving valuables in cars often in full view of criminals who prey on unwary motorists and passengers. In particular cars parked at beauty spots throughout the area are proving an easy target.

Sector Inspector Matt Armstrong said: “Many people’s cars are like a shop window to thieves. A significant number of vehicle-related crimes can be reduced if people simply take a few extra moments to remove valuables like laptops and sat navs. Vehicle-related crime in the Melksham and Devizes area could fall by as much as 45 per cent if people locked their doors.”

Police are working with businesses, including shops and petrol stations, to display signs where they are less likely to be damaged and more likely to be seen by the public.

Inspector Armstrong said: “We really need to make it clear to people that they can help prevent themselves falling victim to this type of crime.”

Officers have been taking pictures of some of the typical things they see left on display out and about on proactive patrols in known theft blackspots across the area.

Inspector Armstrong added: “Wiltshire has some superb areas for walking and sightseeing, often serviced by lay-bys and car parks and it is a fair bet that those people parked in such areas may be away from their vehicle for some time.

“Unfortunately they are often being watched and even placing items in the boot or under a seat alerts the thieves where to break in.”
