Students at St John’s School certainly made their old school building rock with their latest production, and the last before the school is demolished, We Will Rock You.

This show was a sell out days before it opened and, with a matinee for children from feeder primary schools and OAP groups, about 1,500 enjoyed the non-stop music and dance production.

We Will Rock You is set in a future time when original thought and most definitely music are barred.

However a group of Bohemians who can hear songs in their minds recreate the hits of Queen and the legendary Freddie Mercury.

This was an effervescent, foot tapping show jointly directed by teacher Steve Tapper and student Stephen Butler who also played one of the lead roles, Britney, and had the most powerful male voice in the show.

There were great performances by all of the principal characters, notably Annie Quinton Smith who played Scaramouche and has already had a taste of professional stage by appearing in Les Miserables in Fareham.

Hazel Ingham stepped in at the very last moment to play the Killer Queen, when Chyna Sudbury was sidelined with sickness, but she played the part with confidence and skill and enabled to show to keep running.

Charlie Angelo (Galileo) was the Bohemian who, in the innermost recesses of his mind, could recall the long-banned rock and roll music of earlier centuries.

Another memorable performance came from Charlotte Simonis (Pop) who is planning to do drama at college when she leaves St John’s.

The small band led by teacher Max More (keyboards) kept the music flowing magnificently.

The next production by the St John’s students will be in a 500 seat theatre in the brand new school taking shape next to the old buildings and due to open next October
