The Wharf’s next production is a fast-paced comedy thriller based heavily on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film adaptation of the famous John Buchan novel.
The concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 film to be performed with a minimal cast and minimal set. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, and the others play femmes fatale, heavies, policemen, scheming master spies, eccentric hotel owners, crofters, pilots, and many other roles, with accents wandering the length of the British Isles and sometimes even out of the country. The result is lightning fast changes and occasionally actors playing multiple characters at once. The film's serious spy story is played mainly for laughs, and the script is full of allusions to, and puns on, the titles of other Hitchcock films.
The small stage at the Wharf Theatre will host a train chase over the Forth Bridge, a manhunt across the Scottish moors, a biplane crash and a showdown at the London Palladium. Director Paul Snook says “This is a ripping good yarn. Think Jeeves & Wooster meets James Bond in 1935 and you’re in for a great evening’s entertainment.”
