The Paulet Arms, Westbury Road, Edington

The long awaited transformation of the Lamb Inn into the impressive Paulet Arms has been completed to a very high standard.

It now provides accommodation for weary travellers after a hearty and enjoyable meal and an array of fine ales and wines.

On first inspection the pub appears roomy with a warm atmosphere provided by numerous roaring open fires. The decor has been updated with clean lines and a nice wine bar-style look.

We chose to sit in the newly added, bright and airy conservatory, where many other diners were already seated.

We opted to go for the three course lunch menu, reasonably priced at £13.

For starters I chose the potted crayfish with mixed leaves, which were lovely, and my friend Alan chose the freshly made tomato soup, which had a good rich texture. For the main course we had two choices available: either lamb and potato pie or sardines on toast, and we decided to check out one dish each.

I picked the lamb pie and a large portion arrived, served with vegetables on the side. The filling appeared very dry, however, a sauceboat of a jus-like gravy was provided, which helped with the texture of the dish.

The lamb was cooked well and tasted delicious.

Alan chose the sardines on toast, which turned out to be three fresh fish in a tomato sauce served on a slice of ciabatta with a salad on the side.

He was delighted with the taste of the dish, but initially rued his choice having forgotten sardines have fiddly bones.

Next came the divine chocolate brownies with home made ice cream for dessert. The brownies were warmed through and tasted lovely against the coldness of the creamy ice cream.

Throughout the meal we were served by two friendly waitresses who appeared knowledgeable and helpful. Overall it was an enjoyable and pleasant afternoon lunch in a great setting in a fabulous restaurant/pub and I am looking forward to returning to try its extensive evening menu.

The total bill came to £35.40, including two glasses of wine and two coffees.
