Who could refuse the temptation of a cosy burner fire warming cold fingers and toes after a brisk stroll around the delightful village of Upton Scudamore and throw in the promise of fine cuisine and excellent service.

The Angel Inn at Upton Scudamore is a 16th century coaching inn which has gained a reputation for quality food.

It has a large car park and has been recently restored to offer a modern looking interior.

We decided to sit in the busy eating area next to the bar which was full of fellow diners out for a lunch time treat. We were served with homemade bread supplied with pesto and walnut oils for dipping. This was very tasty and came with a portion of olives which are a great favourite (£1.95).

After a brief look at the specials board I chose a pan fried sea bass with pesto mash with vanilla butter sauce (£15.95).

I’m a great fan of fish dishes and this was an especially delicious and generous main course. The sea bass was cooked to perfection. My mother Christine decided on the pork tenderloin on savoy cabbage, bacon and caramelised apple and Stilton sauce (£14.95).

She was unusually quiet during her main dish which is a clear sign of a well cooked and well chosen main course.

She particularly liked the taste of the apple and Stilton sauce which had a slight crunch and complemented the pork tenderloin which was cooked just right.

I have to admit to being a fan of desserts and opted for the cherry and almond fredo with pistachio ice cream (£5.95) because I had never tried anything like it before.

It was soft and creamy with a lovely taste of cherry and almond and the pistachio ice cream was simply yummy.

Christine chose the coffee and Bailey’s creme brulee with chocolate chip cookies (£5.95).

This was an excellent choice of dessert as it’s her absolute favourite pudding.

The top was easily cracked to reveal the delight of coffee and Bailey’s intertwined to produce a delicious and generous portion.

We finished lunch with coffees, feeling very full but very happy with our visit. I’m sure we will be visiting again soon and taking advantage of the excellent customer service and delightful food.

The total bill, with drinks, came to £52.
