I’ve passed the Oliver Cromwell many times on my journeys around Wiltshire.

It’s set alongside a busy main road passing through Edith’s Marsh and is a striking building with a past that stretches back far into Wiltshire history.

Overlooking the impressive Roundway Downs, the view from the restaurant garden is simply breathtaking. Once the scene of intense fighting during the Battle of Roundway, now the view, especially from the beer garden, is of rolling hills and lush green fields.

On entering the pub I was greeted warmly by the staff. The interior is traditional and spacious, with a large bar area with seating and a sports TV showing all the national games.

There is also a dining area, which is separate and nicely situated to enjoy a laid back lunch or a sociable evening meal.

The pub also offers a function room, which was booked by a local classic car club when I was there.

The jolly owner took my order for chicken fajitas with a side of salad (£7.95).

My meal arrived in good time and was a generous portion size. The chicken was tender and mixed with onions, chillies and natural yogurt to produce a spicy Fajita that was packed with flavour. The salad was fresh, crispy and a welcoming balance to the heat of the chicken wraps.

To accompany the dish I chose a glass of lemonade, which was very refreshing. I would certainly return to try out the other dishes on the menu, which looked tasty and satisfying.

My bill came to £9.15.
